Hello, friends!
We’re bouncing into your inboxes with this newsletter, because today is a big day for us! Let’s get started.
⚔️ What we’ve been up to
This month has been filled with celebration, friendship, book launches, amazing readers, and a truly magical possum encounter — but we’ll get to that later.
First: Lady’s Knight is out in the world now!
We are so proud of this book. It’s fun, it’s funny, it’s cozy and clever. There are cheerleaders at the jousting tournament, crocodiles in the moat, makeovers, magic, croissants and (according to fantasy legend Ellen Kushner) “the sexiest gown-unlacing scene in modern literature.” It’s also our first queer love story, and writing it felt like coming home to a part of ourselves we’ve been wanting to share for a long time.
The story follows a blacksmith called Gwen who dreams of being a knight, and a noblewoman called Isobelle who finds herself in a sticky situation, and decides she’s not going to wait around for a champion to show up — she’s going to recruit one.
We hope it feels like a safe, soft place to land, the way it did for us while writing it. Writing this book was a joyful experience, and the best early feedback we’ve been hearing from readers is that this story simply makes them happy. We could all use a bit of that right now.
Now, just for fun — a little sneak peek. These are a few of our favourite chapter titles from Lady’s Knight. If these don’t hook you, nothing will:
The Sort Of Thing That Gets A Girl Burned At The Stake
Ridiculously, Fabulously Pink
Bring It On
Chivalry Is All Well And Good, But Cursed Inconvenient At Times
Maybe We Could Wash The Donkeys
The Violence Is Too Much For Her Delicate Constitution
No Lady Went In Search Of The Privy Alone When She Could Bring A Friend
What A Perfectly Normal Conversational Gambit
This Goes A Lot More Smoothly In Ballads
You’d Be Very Surprised What A Fancy Lady Can Get Done
Want another sneak peek? Make sure you head over to the latest issue of the Pub Dates newsletter, where we shared a look at our pitch document in the issue that accompanies our latest podcast episode!
You can also listen to our episode about Lady’s Knight, where we chat all about how the book came to be.
🛁 Celebrating 20 years of friendship
Meg visited Amie in Australia recently, and since October marks twenty years of our friendship (how??), we took the chance to celebrate a little early.
Our favourite moment was heading to the local hot springs — a beautiful, luxurious space where we’ve brainstormed every single book we’ve ever written together, and most of our solo efforts as well. There’s something about the water there that just makes magic.
As we sat soaking under the stars, talking plot twists and future books, a tiny ringtail possum jumped up onto the edge of the pool beside us. It took a little drink, hung out for a while in a very friendly manner, and then disappeared back into the night. We felt like Disney princesses! (And for our US readers: Australian possums are adorable. No nightmares involved.)
