Hello, friends!
It’s been a little while, but we are back, and we have news — such news!
We are so, so delighted to tell you that our next book will be out in June 2025.
Lock up your dragons, because we’re bringing you the medieval sapphic fantasy of your dreams. You’re hearing about it before the general public does tomorrow, so please keep the news under your knightly visors until then!
We can’t wait for you to meet Gwen and Isobelle. We’ve never had as much fun writing anything in our lives, and early readers are telling us that our joy just bursts out of this story on every page.
What’s it about?
So glad you asked! Here’s the quick version — and the longer version that you’ll find on the back of the book.
An undeniably fierce, unforgettably funny, unapologetically queer feminist romp through the England of medieval legend. Bestselling and acclaimed authors Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner bring readers along on an epic quest for valor, freedom, and, above all, love. A Knight’s Tale meets My Lady Jane, with a dash of The Great!
Gwen is sick of hiding—hiding the fact that she’s taken over her father’s blacksmithing duties, hiding her attraction to girls, hiding her yearning for glory as a knight.
Meanwhile, Lady Isobelle of Avington, queen bee of the castle, has never once considered hiding who she is—until now. She’s been chosen as the grand prize in the Tournament of Dragonslayers, to be given to whichever knight can claim her hand. And for the first time in her life, she can’t talk her way out of trouble.
When Isobelle discovers Gwen’s knightly ambitions, they hatch a scheme together—Gwen will joust in the tournament, disguised as Sir Gawain. Winning means freedom for Isobelle, and glory for Gwen. Losing means… well, let’s not go there.
One thing’s for falling in love was never the plan.
But the best laid plans…are often trampled all over by dragons.
How did this story get started?
It all started long ago, in lockdown. With Meg in the US and Amie in Australia, we’re pretty good at being together while we’re apart, but even our powers were stretched to the limits by that point.
One night we settled in for a movie night together, jointly watching A Knight’s Tale, and chatting our way through it as we did.
By the end of the movie, we’d realised two things:
We still loved this movie, twenty years on from its original release.
Kate the blacksmith (yes, she had a name!) deserved more.
And so the first inklings of a story were born. We plunged into the kind of medieval England where there are crocodiles in the castle moat, cheerleaders on the tournament grounds, and training montages with 80s backing tracks. There are witches, cocktails, thatched roofs, makeovers, side quests, haylofts, brilliantly colored gowns, sword fights, dungeon rescues, bonfires, ballrooms, and, of course, a copious amount of snacks.
(We personally recommend the cheesecake on a stick.)
In short, we sent our editor a pitch full of pictures like this.
And she lunged for it. Which was lucky, because we were already head over heels for this story.
It’s fun and it’s funny, but it’s also deeply thoughtful. We wanted to speak to what love between women can look like—what changes in the structure and nuance of a classic love story when men aren’t a part of the equation. We wanted to talk about the sources of women’s power, and the ways society tries to hide them from us.
As we built the story around our star-crossed lovers, those questions about expectations, gender roles, and classic tropes spilled out into a hundred other areas of the book. The result is a world and a cast of characters where nothing, and no one, is what they seem.
We love it, and we can’t wait to share it with you.
